Toilets can block for a number of reasons. The most common reason is putting something down your toilet that doesn’t belong there. Read on for the three most common situations that cause a blocked toilet.
Only flush these things down the toilet
The 3 P’s are the only items that should be flushed down your toilet (besides water):
- Pee
- Poo
- Paper
Don’t flush these things down the toilet
Don’t flush:
- hand paper towel
- baby wipes
- sanitary tampons and pads
These should be placed in a rubbish bin, not flushed down the loo!
If your toilet has an inadequate flush
The second thing that can cause your toilet to block is inadequate flush. While all products sold in Australia are theoretically watermarked and have attained the minimum standard, not all toilets flush equally.
You may have an old toilet bowl designed for a cistern that used to flush 12 litres of water which you’ve replaced with a dual flush that only flushes 6 litres or less on the full flush.
Your cistern buttons may not be operating properly – when you flush the toilet, do you hold the button down until the cistern fully empties, or do you just press the button lightly and walk away?
If there is not adequate water, the 3 P’s may not flush properly causing a build-up in the drain.
Your drain can cause toilet flushing issues
The third thing that causes your drain to block is how your below ground drain operates.
If it was installed with inadequate fall or if it is old and has cracked and has tree roots growing in it, a build up of products flushed down the drain will eventually cause the drain to block.
